Some Nine thousand acres in size it once supported a wide range of skills from rope to lace making, wheelwright to nail manufacturing ,but its main industry  was farming and quarrying for  minerals

Mentioned in the Domesday Book, as Essovre, derived from ‘the village standing beyond the edge of the ash forest. It started life with 14 smallholding's, a church, a priest and an inn.
